Ross Lovegrove
Ross Lovegrove, born in 1958, is one of the most famous contemporary industrial designers. He graduated from the University of Manchester, and completed his Master of Design at the Royal College of Art. Early in his career, the Frog Design, in Germany, employed him. Where he worked on Walkman for Sony and computers for Apple. Ross cooperated with many designers and work for many popular companies like Louis Vuitton, DuPont, Airbus, etc. After that, in 1990, he finally created his own studio, “Studio X”, in London.
His concept of design is to connect the beauty of nature with new technology. Most of his works show flowing lines, dazzling colors and high quality materials. He advocated for “organic nature” in design.
Examples of Lovegrove’s work:
·       The Water Bottle shows the style of Ross’ design that is based on nature. The body of the bottle was designed like flowing water by using soft curves in the plastic.
·       He designed The DNA spiral staircase for Studio X. The graceful lines of the stairs are like a dancer’s movement and bring a nice visual effect.
·       The system X light is made of plastic and aluminum. The X-shape tube can consist of different geometric shapes and is enough to light the place or office.
·       The Solar Tree is designed for the Museum for Angewandte Kunst (MAK) in Vienna, and the first time that the Solar Tree Solar Tree was unveiled was on 8 October 2007, on the Ringstraße in front of MAK during Vienna Design Week. The Solar Tree is similar to the roots of a plant and is made of 20 steel tubes. It absorbs solar energy at day and lights the street at night. It’s a new way of using renewable energy.
·       The Istanbul series is one of Ross’ design masterpieces and it won the 2006 World Best Bathroom Award and Red Dot Design Award.
He has won a lot of awards. For instance:
·       RedDot 2010 Best of the Best
·       Hungarian Design Prize
·       Batimat Design Award 2009
·       Vogue Traveller Ecology Prize, SOLAR TREE, etc.
His works is also in many large museums and is internationally know. And now, he still works on his design, which inspires by nature, in Studio X in London.
